01 / Paper & notebooks

Choose the page before the pen.

Begin with the task: quick notes, a layout sketch or a passage you will revise. A smaller book travels easily; a larger page leaves room for margins and parallel translations. The format on a card is taken from that source title, not a measured sample.

  • Use lined paper for steady handwriting; dot grid or blank paper leaves more freedom for spacing studies.
  • Check the binding position against your writing direction and hand. A flat opening is useful, but it is not guaranteed by a format label.
  • Try your own ink on a spare page before committing a whole notebook. Feathering, show-through and drying depend on the paper and ink together.

02 / Pens & lettering

Choose a writing experience.

A pen can change the rhythm of a line without changing the words. Compare grip shape, weight, cap and refill system before treating appearance as the deciding feature. These selections support different tasks: outline drawing, brush lettering and everyday annotation. We have not tested them.

  • Nib labels are not standardized measurements across brands. Ask for a writing sample using the width and paper you intend to use.
  • A round fountain-pen nib does not replace a broad-edge calligraphy tool. For Arabic or other calligraphic traditions, match nib geometry and instruction to the style.
  • Check whether cartridges, a converter or bottled ink are needed and which are included.

03 / Ink & refills

Compatibility before colour.

Start with the writing tool’s filling system and the manufacturer’s guidance. Choose a refill only when the exact pen and filling system accept it. Bottled fountain-pen ink does not refill a sealed fineliner or brush pen.

  • Use ink intended for your exact kind of pen. A dip-pen ink or drawing ink is not automatically suitable for a fountain pen.
  • Check cartridge shape and refill model against the original part. Similar names and the same brand are not enough.
  • Colour, permanence, water resistance and drying behaviour need separate checks. No unverified durability claim is made here.
